What is less well known is that by winning Kapalua’s Plantation Course, Smith earned the biggest salary of his young and successful professional golfer career: $ 1.475 million. This exceeds the previous record of $ 1.188 million set by Smith for his victory at the Sony Open 2020.
Suffice it to say, it’s worth it to be successful on the PGA Tour. Literally. The winners of any full-status tour event earn seven-figure payouts that will only increase in 2022. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan explained to tour members late last year that tournament prices would rise from $ 375 million to $ 427 million in 2022, thanks in part to increased revenue from the new television contract that goes into effect this year.
An interesting fact about Smith’s $ 1.475 million salary, however, is that it places him among the active pros on the PGA Tour in terms of the largest individual earnings earned. As big as $ 1.475 million, it only ranks Smith 44th among all current members of the tour in terms of biggest single winnings.
Yes, 43 other PGA Tour pros have won more than this amount.
With the help of the PGA Tour communications team, Golf Digest has compiled a list of the biggest payouts for every active player on the tour. Justin Thomas sits in first place with his $ 2.7 million windfall for winning last year’s Players’ Championship. He is one of 11 tour pros to win over $ 2 million.
Meanwhile, of the 266 golfers with some form of active touring status (winners, top 125 on FedEx Cup points, Korn Ferry Tour graduates, former champions, medical extensions, etc.), you might be surprised that 155 of them (58.2 percent) won a check for $ 1 million at some point in their careers. And of the total membership, the largest average check is $ 1,000,756.40. (This includes one player, Callum Tarren, who has a Touring Card but hasn’t won any Touring Cash Prizes yet; take that out of the equation, and the average rises to $ 1,004,532.84.)
Below is a list of the 155 active players whose biggest winnings have passed the million dollar mark. Interestingly, not all are checks earned on the road to victory. Louis Oosthuizen, for example, has his biggest paycheck for his finalist at last year’s US Open ($ 1.35 million) rather than his win at the 2010 Open Championship ($ 1,305,593.20) . Larger checks for something that has not been earned are shown in parentheses.
