Graphic design competition to welcome visitors to New Rochelle now open

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – You never get a second chance to make a first impression, and the city of New Rochelle is looking for an artist who can help get the job done in style.

The City of New Rochelle announced Thursday that it is seeking entries for a juried art competition open to regional artists to submit original graphic designs to decorate North Ave. Bridge in New Rochelle. Crossing the Metro-North Railroad tracks, this new art installation is intended to provide a welcoming sight for visitors and local commuters as they travel to and from New Rochelle.

In addition to having their works exhibited, the winner or winning team will receive a $3,000 prize.

The artwork will be printed on vinyl and attached to the blue wall panels located on the west side of the North Ave bridge.

Contest entrants may submit their work individually or as a team and must include the words “New Rochelle Station” as a signature pointer while incorporating their own personal artistic characteristics into the piece. The work can be abstract or painterly depending on the style of the artist, but must include an element indicating the proximity of the work to the train station.

The winning artwork will serve as both a wayfinding landmark and a celebration of the revitalization of downtown New Rochelle, highlighting and elevating the city’s growing reputation as a vibrant arts scene. Applicants will be scored on originality, creativity, composition, and adherence to theme. Current and former residents of New Rochelle will receive an additional 5 points towards their total score.

Contest and application information is available on the city’s website. The deadline for submitting entries is September 28, with the selection of a winning entry expected to take place in November. The Selection Jury will be composed of members of the Municipal Arts Commission of the City of New Rochelle. The winning bid should be installed before the end of the year.
